Waltner, Christine Marie Duerksen
January 20, 1930 — July 27, 2024

Christine Marie (Duerksen) Waltner, age 94, had a peaceful homegoing the morning of July 27, 2024, at Kidron Bethel Village in North Newton, KS. She had a long rich life of relationships and exceptional experiences.

Christine was born on January 20, 1930, in Champa, India, to Jacob R. and Christena Duerksen, who were Mennonite missionaries. Christine was the middle child with older brother, Joe, and younger sister, Lois. Her early education was at Woodstock School, an international residential school in the Himalayan foothills. At age 16 she returned to the United States and attended Bethel College where she received her degree in Education. It was here that she met her future husband, Harris Waltner. They were married on August 15, 1951, and spent the next couple years in Chicago at Mennonite Biblical Seminary where Harris was studying for the ministry.

Their first move was to Moundridge, KS, where Harris pastored the West Zion Mennonite Church. All three of their children, John, Carol and Marilyn, were born there. Over the next 21 years (1963-1984) they moved to serve churches in Ritzville, WA, Fort Wayne, IN (one-year interim), and Mountain Lake, MN. In 1984 they accepted an invitation to go to Lesotho in Southern Africa to serve for 6 years at the Maseru United Church, a non-denominational multicultural congregation. Upon returning to Kansas in 1991 they finished up their church career in Manhattan at the Manhattan Mennonite Church.

During all these years Christine was a capable and loving wife, mother and grandmother, although she also found satisfaction in working at various part-time jobs as substitute teacher, fabric store clerk and physical therapy aide. All these experiences showed her interest in people and care for others.

In 2002 their final move was to Kidron Bethel Village where they enjoyed community life, the educational and cultural opportunities of their location and especially, being reunited with family, former friends, classmates and colleagues. When both Harris and Christine experienced health issues in 2011, Harris moved to Health Care where he died in 2012 and Christine became a resident of Assisted Living and then Health Care. There she continued her hobbies of reading, embroidery and interacting with people.

Christine was preceded in death by her parents, brother Joe Duerksen and sister Lois Deckert. She leaves three children: John (Pam), Carol (Stan), and Marilyn; eight grandchildren: Jonathan (Morgan), Laura (AJ/Alejandro), Lindsay, Sarah (John), Erica (Matilda), Christian (Anna), Reid (Jena) and Ross; and six great grandchildren: Wren Lyra, Augie, Adeline, Calvin and Louisa.

A memorial service will be held at Shalom Mennonite Church, Newton, on September 28 at 11:00 am. Memorial gifts are suggested for Kidron Bethel Village in honor of the wonderful care she received while a resident there.

Weaver, Irvin David
April 26, 1929 - January 3, 2024

Quote from Irv Weaver, December 31, 2023
“God has put me in pleasant places, and I’m blessed beyond measure.”

Irvin David Weaver was born April 26, 1929. He was the son of Levi Martin Weaver and Elsie Nolt Weaver and was married to Katherine Phenneger Weaver on April 17, 1949. He and Kitty had 10 children together. Their parental efforts and love created a tightknit extended family.

His steadfast appreciation for God’s blessing could not go unnoticed. Irv's genuine smile, joyful heart and hearty handshake revealed this whenever he greeted you. Irv committed to helping people his whole life through social services and ministry using them as a pathway to share God's grace and love. Irv always had an optimistic and humorous spirit. He was positive in all situations, competitive, and athletic. Many Sunday afternoons were spent playing outdoor games with family and friends ending with a bowl of homemade ice cream. He was a runner and golfer and continued this commitment to health & wellness during his time at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community. Many mornings he began his day working out at the fitness center and enjoying coffee with his friends - an important social highlight of his time at VMRC.

His audacious faith led him to follow the beacon of God’s calling. At the age of 21 he left a comfortable life on the family farm in Lancaster to attend Eastern Mennonite College - taking his new wife and 5-month-old daughter along. After receiving his Bible Degree in 1954, he and his brother Levi moved to Bath, NY to farm and founded the Pleasant Valley Mennonite Church. Turning to church development and social work, he continued to serve the Lord in every place God led him. His path was often challenging, as his life experiences ranged from farming, trucking, prison ministry, and serving as the Family Services Director and marriage counselor in Corning NY.

He later returned to church work as the Alleghany Conference Minister and then the Vice-President of Home Missions in Elkhart, IN for the Mennonite Board of Missions. Everywhere he went, Irv spread the love of our Lord with unwavering faith.

He is survived by his sister, H. Lorraine Weaver; his children Susan L. Halterman, husband Bernie; D. Paul Weaver; Phyllis M. Thomas, husband Alfred; Dale P. Weaver; Douglas P. Weaver, wife Sandra; Marcia W. Jones and husband Kevin; Dean M. Weaver’s spouse, Andrea Stoltzfus Weaver; Kay W. Lera and husband Robert; his grandchildren and great-grand children: Kristin (Halterman) Marriage and husband Chris and their children (Isla, Julian and Estelle); Maxximillian Thomas, Alex Thomas; Benjamin Weaver, Katrina (Weaver) Ferrario and husband Adam, Leslie Weaver; Joshua Weaver and wife Michelle and their child (Genevieve Grace), Zachary Weaver; Garyn Jones and wife Missy Neis, Hannah Jones and husband John Lange; Chloe Weaver, Sophie Weaver, Kate Weaver and Luke Weaver.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Grace Graybill, Miriam Shoup, Ruth Esh; his brother Levi H. Weaver and two children early in life Judy, and David and, more recently, by his beloved wife Kitty and son Dean Mark Weaver of Harrisonburg Virginia.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 11, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Detwiler Auditorium at VMRC. The family will receive friends following the service.

Burial will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers and gifts, please send donations to the VMRC Good Samaritan Fund, 1501 Virginia Avenue, Harrisonburg, VA 22802 or the Lindale Mennonite Church Deacon Sharing Fund, 6255 Jesse Bennett Way, Linville, VA 22834. Both funds provide direct assistance to those in need.

Whitehead, Robert E. "Bob"
February 13, 1941 - September 30, 2024

Robert E. "Bob" Whitehead, 83, of Kokomo, passed away on September 30, 2024, due to complications from Alzheimer's disease.

Bob was born in Wahiawa, Oahu in Hawaii on February 13, 1941, to Russell and Alice (Amorin) Whitehead. He enjoyed his childhood in Wahiawa with his brother, Roy, many cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents in Maui. Later on, Bob and his family moved to Kokomo, Indiana. Although the change in climate was a disappointment, he made the most of it by getting into fun shenanigans with Roy while attending St. Joan of Arc Catholic School. He also served as an altar boy at St. Joan of Arc church. Later on, he attended Kokomo High School. One of his proudest accomplishments in high school was becoming an Eagle Scout.

Bob graduated from Kokomo High School in 1959 and continued in his studies to earn a bachelor's degree from Indiana State University in social studies education, and a master's degree from Ball State University in elementary education. He believed very strongly in the power of public education and dedicated 32 years of his life to teaching, with 29 of those years at Carroll Elementary School in Flora. After retirement, he worked part time for the Head Start preschool program in the Kokomo Center Schools.

Bob met Grace Sommers in 1970, and they married and had two children, Christopher and Emily. Bob adored his children and his extended family. He felt particular joy in the moments that they could be together. His joy was heightened at the birth of his sole grandchild, Aliana in 2008, who has remained a constant light in Bob's life. He wanted to spend as much time with family as possible up until the end.

Bob placed a high value on improving the lives of people in his local community. He served for many years on the family selection committee for Habitat for Humanity, and helped to create a scholarship called the "Peace Scholarship" which is designed for students committed to achieving peace in today's world. On a global scale, Bob was committed to supporting Heifer International, an organization focused on ending hunger and poverty throughout the world by providing tools, training and resources to farmers. In his church, Parkview Mennonite, Bob was active in the Community Outreach Committee and was involved in a mentoring program for children. He often led "children's time" and taught Sunday School.

Bob was an extravert and never met a stranger. If you started a sentence with, "Hey Bob, do you want to go to___" the answer was always yes, because Bob was DOWN FOR IT. His many hobbies included golfing, playing cards, traveling, reading, watching the Chicago Cubs, and campaigning for political and social justice causes he felt passionately about in his community. Most importantly, he lived his life in a way that showed others he believed that everyone was worthy of love and belonging.

Bob is survived by his wife, Grace Whitehead, his son, Christopher Whitehead (Missy), daughter Emily, granddaughter Aliana Polanco, brother, Roy (Jeanne) and many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.

Funeral service will be held at Noon Saturday October 5, 2024, at Parkview Mennonite Church, 1382 Co. Rd. E. 100 N., Kokomo, with Frank Kandel officiating. Burial will follow in Mast Hensler Cemetery, Kokomo. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 10 am – 12 pm Saturday at the church. In memory of Bob, donations can be made to Alzheimer's Awareness and the Peace Scholarship fund in Kokomo.

Wise, Sally A. Brugger
July 19, 1961 - March 17, 2024

Sally A. Wise, 62, of Lititz, passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2024, at her home.

She was born to the late Nevin K. and C. Ann (Oberholtzer) Brugger of Akron, PA, and was the wife of David Wise.

Sally graduated from Ephrata High School in 1979 and received her BA from Ursinus College. Sally traveled to Germany many times: a time living with the Lehmann family (who became a life-long connection), a college junior year abroad (University of Freiburg), 14 student exchanges and personal travel. Sally taught German at several areas schools before having children. She resumed teaching at Ephrata High School where she taught for more than 20 years.

Sally was tireless in service to her callings. She continued the excellence of the German language program at Ephrata HS through instruction (34 of 40 student earned medals in 2024 national testing), student exchanges with Eberbach (sister city in Germany), German NHS and more. Her guiding vision: international friendships build bridges of peace and understanding. Sally was a nurturer and advocate, particularly for young women and marginalized (immigrants, LGBTQ, parentless and other disadvantaged students). Son Peter observed that she was a "mother to all."

Sally poured love and wisdom into her own children from stay-at-home mom years through adulthood. Peter and Annie were her crown jewels. Ever intentional, in her last year, she spoke and wrote her love, advice and reflections for family members. Sally was a matriarch and glue that held her wider families together, caring for her mother for 20+ years, and hosting countless extended family dinners. Nieces, nephews and their spouses felt Sally's embrace and support. Sally was an excellent cook and assembled a two-volume cookbook of her best meals as a continuing gift for her family. Appreciation of art and art history extends from Sally's mom Ann through Sally to daughter Annie, including many visits to galleries in the US and Europe. Sally enjoyed nature - birds, wildflowers, fishing - especially at Quimby Country in Vermont. Sally enjoyed a challenging hike and a great meal after, something she and Dave shared since 1978. In later years, out of love for her children, Sally pushed herself to hike in the Alps/Dolomites and backpack in Colorado's wilderness areas - joyful memories for her family.

Sally participated in Akron Mennonite Church and Blossom Hill Mennonite Church and enjoyed friendships and small groups of each. A multi-decade book group of inquisitive women was a joy.

Sally's self-chosen epitaph: loving wife, mother, sister, life-long learner, teacher, servant.

In addition to her husband, Sally is survived by a son, Peter Wise of Boulder, CO; a daughter, Annie Wise of Washington, DC; a brother, Steve, husband of Rebecca Brugger of Stevens; a sister, Julie, wife of Paul Finke of Davidson, NC and a sister-in-law, Trina Brugger of Denver.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Jeffrey Brugger.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Akron Mennonite Church, 1311 Diamond Street, Akron. Receiving line 2:00-3:00, service 3:30 PM.

Memorial contributions in Sally's memory may be made to Good Samaritan Services at https://app.giveffect.com/campaigns/28931-sally-and-david-wise#cover

Witmer, N. Harvey
November 19, 1941 — January 9, 2024

Norman Harvey Witmer was born on November 19, 1941, in the Chambersburg, Pennsylvania area. He was the second child, oldest son, of the late Norman and Anna Witmer. At the age of three months his family moved to the Sheldon, Wisconsin area, where he grew up helping his parents carve a farmstead out of the Wisconsin woods.

At a young age Harvey gave his heart to the Lord and joined the church at Sheldon, Wisconsin. He met Marilyn Baer when she came from Pennsylvania with her cousin Glenn Baer to attend a Bible School at Sheldon. They were married on June 23, 1962, at McBride, British Columbia.

Harvey and Marilyn lived in the McBride area for four and a half years, and during that time Kenneth and Sharon were born. In September of 1966, the family moved to Sheldon, WI, where they lived till May of 1967, at which time they moved to Unity, WI. In the fall of 1967, Harvey was ordained minister.

Harvey was a church leader and dairy farmer in the Unity area for twenty-five years. Six more children were added to the family in those years - Arlene, Duane, Jerilyn, Beverly, Gloria and Harlan. During this time, they spent two years serving on the mission field in the Dominican Republic. In July of 1981, Harvey was ordained bishop.

The Unity church started an outreach in southern Wisconsin in 1992 and the family relocated to that area. It was here that Harvey spent the last thirty-two years of his life.

Harvey will be remembered for how he enjoyed people and for his interest in the knowledge of God’s world around him. Most importantly we remember his burden for the church and his concern for those who were under his care as a leader.

He was taken home to heaven on January 9, 2024, at the age of eighty-two years, one month, twenty-one days. We rejoice in the peacefulness of his passing and his release from his earthly body.

He will be lovingly remembered by Marilyn, his wife of nearly sixty-two years, and his children, son Kenneth (Anna) of Craven Arms, England, daughter Sharon (Duane) Hoover of Neshkoro, Wisconsin, daughter Arlene (Laurence) Fox of Browerville, Minnesota, son Duane (Kendra) of Medford, Wisconsin, daughter Jerilyn (Cornelius) Bauman of Garland, Utah, daughter Beverly (Titus) Byler of Goodhue, Minnesota, daughter Gloria (Keith) Weaver of Tremonton, Utah, son Harlan (Eunice) of Arlington, Vermont, his fifty-one grandchildren, forty-four great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his sisters Carolyn (Witmer) Baer of Sheldon, Wisconsin and Lorene Witmer of Augusta, Wisconsin. His brothers, Claire (Clara) Witmer of Sheldon, Wisconsin, Dennis (Naomi) Witmer of Aztec, New Mexico, Dallas (Rhoda) Witmer of Villa del Rosario, Colombia, Aaron (Rhoda) Witmer of Watertown, South Dakota, Ervin (Ruth) Witmer of Cadott, Wisconsin, Ernest (Yvonne) Witmer of Ronks, Pennsylvania.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Anna Witmer, his sister Pauline, grandsons Wendall Fox and Jackson Weaver and great-grandson Lincoln Schrock, his brothers-in-law Glenn Baer and Dennis Hindal, sisters-in-law Florence (Leslie) Witmer and Rachel (Schrader) Witmer.

Wyse, Geneva Arlene Rupp
February 18, 1931 - December 16, 2024

Geneva Arlene Wyse, 93, of Archbold, died peacefully with her husband by her side on the afternoon of Monday, December 16, 2024, at 12:38 pm at Fairlawn Nursing Home in Archbold, OH. Geneva was born February 18, 1931 in Pettisville, OH, the second daughter to Lawrence and Lucretia (Sauder) Rupp. She grew up on a farm near Pettisville, Ohio. It was likely here that she grew into the servant heart that led her to minister and love others tirelessly throughout her life.

Geneva met her husband, Dale Wyse, after the two were introduced by an eager Ralph Aeschliman that had his own eyes set on Geneva’s older sister, Virginia. Ralph’s matchmaking skills were an all-around success as both couples found their marriage companions that day. Dale and Geneva married on March 4, 1951 and he made her laugh nearly every day for the next 73 years.

Outside of her home Geneva was never afraid to reinvent herself through work that ministered to the community. She spent years as a dedicated volunteer in many capacities, including Sauder Village, Ten Thousand Villages, and teaching Sunday School. While raising six kids Dale and Geneva took up the call to ministry at Inlet Mennonite Church and Central Mennonite Church where Geneva tended to their church family in a variety of creative and generous ways while Dale served as pastor. Together they tackled service projects and travel adventures that took them all over the world. One of Geneva's favorite acts of service were the years they spent on summer staff at Little Eden Camp in Onekama, Michigan. She made her famous cinnamon rolls and potato salad as an act of ministry those summers, but it was her much-loved laugh and “oh my stars” that the guests and staff likely remember most.

Geneva’s affection for her children and grandchildren ran deep. Every grandchild knew they would be greeted with joy, excitement, and good food the minute they walked through the door. Grandma wouldn’t hesitate to drop everything to help, and her family greatly benefited from her fearless sewing skills that stretched from altered wedding dresses to beautiful knotted comforters.

Geneva is survived by her husband, Dale Wyse, her children Terry (Jane Nofziger) Wyse, Duane (Cecilia Hooley) Wyse, Dan (Jhan Yoder) Wyse, Peggy (Mike) Short, Michael (Julia Stutzman) Wyse, Ken (Jenny Litwiller) Wyse, 18 grandchildren, and 45 great grandchildren; as well as siblings Marlin Rupp, Mabel Ann Kauffman, Butch Rupp and Janette Yoder.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Virginia Aeschliman, and 2 grandchildren.

Her gentle compassion, endless energy, and servant's heart will never be forgotten. She overflowed with grace, generosity, and beauty lit from within. To know her was to be loved.

Memorial services will be held on December 27, at 11 AM at Central Mennonite Church. Interment will precede in the Pettisville Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday, December 26, at Central from 4-6 PM.

Wyse, Valeria Jean Stuckey
March 26, 1930 - June 7, 2024

Valeria Jean Wyse, 94, was welcomed into Heaven on June 7, 2024, with family by her side. She was born to Clara and Elmer Stuckey on March 26, 1930. A member of Lockport Church her entire life, she will always be remembered for her strong faith and endless compassion and service to others.

Raised a hard-working farmer’s daughter, Val embraced the necessary messiness of farm life. She was a daddy’s girl and often recalled working happily, side by side with him or singing loudly above the tractor rumbles late into the evenings.

After high school, Valeria worked as a book keeper for Lugbill’s until she married her loving and devoted husband, Mahlon Wyse, on December 25, 1951. Her new role quickly became homemaker and mother to 7 children who they raised with love and patience.

Involvement in church and serving within her community was always a priority for Val. She taught children for many years in Sunday school and VBS. She had 30 years of volunteering at Care & Share and Sauder’s Museum gift shop, and 20 plus years with Meals on Wheels. As empty-nesters, Val and Mahlon enjoyed missions trips together near and far. So many church sewings and quilting days too…the volunteer hours could never be counted. It was just part of who she was and how she and Mahlon lived their lives.

Val was quick-witted and bantering with her brought laughter to her family and friends. She loved funny stories and appreciated a good prank from time to time. She was always ready to prepare a good meal for anyone who walked in the door and no one ever left her doorstep hungry. Even though days and seasons were filled with sewing clothes, canning, gardening, attending to farm animals, children and grandchildren, she always made time for friends and neighbors, a good card game, yard game or watching the sun set on warm summer nights.

Before her passing, all her children were able to spend sweet, holy moments with her. She spoke of heavenly reunions and how excited she was to meet her two sisters, Letha and Treva, who passed before she was born. Valeria was a beautiful woman of God and quite a wonderful mother, sister and friend. Her legacy will live on through her family. She is survived by her 7 children: son, Edward (Marjorie) Wyse; six daughters, Charlinda (Edgar) Miller, Patricia (Andy) Short, Donna (Brian) Dawes, Debra (Jeff) VanderKooy, Diane (Dean) Callison, Norma (TJ) Harais; 19 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren with more coming soon; and sister, Marcella (Vince) Frey.

Valeria was preceded in death by her loving husband of 66 years, Mahlon Wyse, two sisters, Letha (3.5 years), Treva (10 mo.), brother Loren Stuckey, son-in-law W. Lee Huffman.

Her immediate family (totaling 91 family members), welcomes everyone to the celebration of her life on Saturday, June 15, Lockport Mennonite Church. Visitation will begin at 9:30am followed by her Celebration of Life at 11:30am with graveside service shortly after. Short Funeral Home in Archbold, OH has been entrusted with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). The family wishes to express thanks to all who visited, supported and shared life with Valeria in her final days.
